Reducing NOX emissions from utility coal fired boilers continues to be a primary goal of environmental authorities. Since the early 1990's nearly all-large utility boilers have installed some form of low NOX burner technology and/or overfire air (OFA) as a primary means or first step to controlling NOX emissions.
With a 100-million-Btuh-fuel-input gas boiler, the average emission factor for an uncontrolled burner is roughly 85 ppm; for a low-NOx burner, it is 42 ppm, and for a low-NOx burner with FGR, it is 26 ppm.1 Keep in mind these are average emissions; they are not regulation requirements and are not to be used as a basis for an air-permit application.
